ROLE AND IMPORTANCE OF THE ELECTRICITY IN OUR LIFE

ROLE AND IMPORTANCE OF THE ELECTRICITY IN OUR LIFE

To maintain the life of the human community, and in order to facilitate the life, many important inventions were discovered. There is no doubt that the most important of these inventions is electricity, which we depend on in the current modern time. We better understand the importance of electricity in our life during a few minutes of power outages we encounter. The people’s social life almost stops in power outages. They do not know what to do. They cannot carry out activities thay made a habit of. For instance, computer and television, that we are addicted to, are the best examples of these. This is an indicator of how much electricity is important in our lives.

Being a universal energy resource, electricity is obtained from methods such as solar power, hydropower, wind power, natural gas, and the like. All devices which facilitate our life and impact a big portion of our life require electricity. Computers and televisions which we never quit looking at, mobile phones which we never unhand, white goods such as washing machine, dishwashing machine which allow us to work less, all reuire electricity. From the moment we open our eyes in the morning, we use electricity at home, office or school until the time we go to bed in the evening.

The project called “Energy Kid” is one of the most important practices realized in this field. This project instills the importance of the energy to children, who will become the next generation in years. While doing this, the meaning of the energy, its role in our life, its efficient use  are presented to children with both educational and entertaining programs. While informing about electricity efficiency, it does not mean sitting in the darkness by turning off the lights, remaining in the cold by stopping off the heaters. What the efficiency means here is using the electricity where and when  it is needed, learning to turn iunless it is needed.

As seen, electricity is a different kind of energy from any kind of energy. It is an energy which cannot be produced without consuming. It means that consumption is required for production. However, what is important here is to be a conscious consumer. In this respect, it is aimed to identify energy aving programs and to provide trainings by experts within the country.

HISTORY OF THE ENERGY

HISTORY OF THE ENERGY

Human being was not aware of energy in the first era. They used to benefit from animal power to facilitate their lives. As time passes, they began to discover the power of energy and began to use it in their daily lives. The first of these was wind energy. They got use of wind energy by means of sails.

Let’s take a brief look at the history of the energy via some resources we have achieved:

1600s : The Netherlands, as the first  country discovering coal in Europe sold this product to foreign countries as well. Then Britain explored its coal and sold to countries which requested as well. In this century, it was discovered that the solar energy creates a higher heat in an environment covered with glass and the first conservatories or greenhouses began to be used next to houses,  in order to heat the space better and grow plants.

1700s : UK were ruthlessly using coal and forests. Coal was preferred because of steam machines. This machine had already been invented because of the coal. British made the predecessor machine of steam car engine in 1710 to pump the water filled in mines. James Watt improved in 1770 and brought into an industrial power.

1800s : Rapid industry change began in England and spread to North America and Europe. It reached all over the world with the strengthening of industries such as textiles and furniture production, which need energy. The first steam locomotive began to operate in 1804 and the first steamboat in 1807. As a natural consequence of development, researches for more machines but cheaper energy began. Coal use was widespread but scientists began to think it would be more accurate to use liquid fuel. As an alternative to coal for electricity generation, hydro, solar and geothermal resources came to the fore.

In 1839, Edmond BECQUAREL noticed that sunlight can produce electricity. Solar power began to be used for the first time in France in 1860. Collectors with glass lid, iron body, reflective surface began to be used to heat the water. They even managed to produce steam in a small steam engine.

At the end of the century, geothermal resources began to be used for electricity generation as well as windmills for heating purpose.

Petrol was found in Pennsylvania, USA, and took place in all areas due to byproducts such as gas, gasoline, fuel-oil. Petrol gained much more importance with the invention of the internal combustion engine.

1900s : Daimler-Benz made the first car, Ford sr-tarted the mass production, Wright Brothers managed to fly.  The rapid transportation acceleratedof the petrol consumption. Meanwhile, Istanbul met the electricity in 1914.

Environmental damage of fossil fuels has led us to different researches which we call  “alternative” since the mid-century. They have long been known, but they could not find the opportunity to become popular. Nuclear energy was an impressive power but its unavoidable effect of radiation was leading to devastating consequences.

December 1973 crisis, led to panic first American petrol companies and then the population. Gasoline prices jumped due to petrol embargo applied by Arabs as a punishment method in the end of Israeli-Arab conflict and this created queues all over the world. The Iranian revolution and the Kuwait invasion by Iraq also affected prices and caused new crisis. Petrol prices are still a strong economical parameter.

2000s : Researches for alternatives, renewable energy resources not specific to a region or to a source gained momentum.

As seen, energy has provided facilities to people in every period of history. In the 21st century, which we are in energy has been still providing major facilities to our lives by even developing. Learning the history of the energy will make us more conscious consumers. The most important part of these consumers includes children. It is attempted to present them this information via mass media.

KEY POINTS TO USE THE ENERGY EFFICIENTLY

KEY POINTS TO USE THE ENERGY EFFICIENTLY

All generations have major duties to save energy, contribute to the family budget and as the most important one, to improve the welfare in our country. Children have undoubtedly major duties in the relevant domain as the next generation. They should provide a more livable environment by minor actions they could take. The most important responsability they accordingly have is to use the energy efficiently. Key points to use the energy efficiently;

  • Add your monthly bills. Separate electricity and gas bills and define the highest expense part (heating, lighting, etc.). Set your saving plan accordingly.
  • Switch off lights while leaving a room. Notices for family members to switch off lights while leaving the room could help. Prefer sensor systems for building lightings.
  • Switch off television, video game, computer, music devices, etc. unless needed.
  • Do not think about what to take out from the refrigerator while holding the fridge door open. Think about it before you open it, then take what you need and close the fridge door again.
  • Replace the ordinary lamps you use with compact fluorescents (saving lamps).
  • Use a small lamp while studying or reading instead of switching on all lights.
  • Prefer “energy efficient products” while buying any device. These devices work harder with much less energy.
  • Keep your room curtains or blinds closed in summer so that your room remains cooler.
  • Keep your curtains closed during winter. Keep curtains open daytime where the sunlight hits directly. Do not use long curtains which can prevent radiators’ heat flow, do not hide radiators behind furniture.
  • Do not leave your building’s entrance and exit doors open in winter.
  • Take advantage of the daylight as much as possible. Desing rooms in a way to make better use of the advantages of natural light.
  • In sections where more light is needed, use a single, high-power lamp instead of many low-power lamps.
  • Take short showers instead of long baths in the tub.
  • Keep unused rooms at low temperature. Re-heating cooled rooms causes more energy consumption than continuously keeping them at a low temperature.
  • Clean or replace filters of your devices such as boiler, heat pump, air conditioning.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY and REASON FOR ENERGY SAVING

ENERGY EFFICIENCY and REASON FOR ENERGY SAVING

Energy efficiency means to minimize the amount of energy consumed by using it efficiently without affecting economic development and social welfare and without compromising its quality and nature. We need to know first what energy saving means before providing energy saving.

Energy saving does not mean to never benefit from the energy or to never use energy, but to use the energy intelligently and as much as we need. Therefore, families, which constitute the most important part of the relevant society have important duties. Women should become role models for children regarding energy consumption during the daily routine. Familiy members use energy resources in cases such as lightings to provide a clear and comfortable environment, cleaning, heating, personal care and the like. Referring to the findings obtained regarding total energy consumption, 40% of the energy is consumed for providing heat water, preparing food, washing laundry and dishes, personal care, entertainment, relaxing and communication. Remaining 60% is related with characteristics of the building.

Energy affects every aspect of our lives. It does not only provide us light and heat, but also provides us facilities by providing fuel for transportation. To this end, messages must be delivered accurately to popularize the wise use of the energy. One of these messages refers to the fact that we need to use renewable energy resources accurately and to focus on the energy efficiency more.

Technological trends, that are being renewed every day in our country with rapid population growth lead to more energy consumption. Therefore, the main factor for ensuring the efficient use of energy is to reduce the energy density.

RAPID ENERGY CONSUMPTION

RAPID ENERGY CONSUMPTION

Experienced Industrial Revolution, capitalism has led to some changes in our lives and still is. One of them is that we are a consumer society. We have been consuming everything quickly and fast. From food to clothing, from the technological devices to the energy we use.

The best example of this rapid consumption era is the scenario published by Think Quest Team on the website called “Energy Matters”s. We would like to share this scenario in the following;

“You wake up one morning with the first light of day, and you feel that the house thoroughly cooled. It is clear that the heater is not on. You open the refrigerator’s door. You realize that the light is off and food has begun to deteriorate. “May it be broken?” you wonder. The concierge should have pressed the ring and asked how much bread you would ask. While wondering if the bell does not ring, you realize that electricity is cut. So no one could ring. You take the telephone to report an electrical fault. There is no sound. It does not work either. Apparently the switchboard is also out of power. You want to go to work by car. The car does not work either. Because there is no gasoline. You go to the gas station 100 meters away with a jerry can in your hand. But what is it! There is a huge notice: “We cannot sell gasoline. No electricity to run pumps, no gasoline to sell. Because now it’s all over.”

The scenario described above may sound unrealistic to all of us. However, if we continue to consume the energy rapidly unconsciously, we will let next generations experience this scenario. We exploit energy unwittingly. Every parents dream that next generations i.e. children live well in the future. There is nothing we would not do for our children. Particularly, we do everything we can so that they live well. As one of the simplest things we could do, we will leave them a legacy of a life liveable by using the energy efficiently.

IMPORTANCE OF THE ENERGY

IMPORTANCE OF THE ENERGY

Energy is not endless like anything else. Unfortunately, due to unconscious consumption, energy is also getting closer to the end. The most important reason for this is that people are not aware of the importance of energy. If everyone becomes a conscious individual, energy consumption may also become efficient in future generations. Energy efficiency signifies the use of our energy resources, which are limited in the most efficient way. This also mean that it will allow the reduction of energy consumption. Energy saving means to function more with less energy.

Energy has become a more important part of our life day by day. We need energy for operation of both white goods and technological devices at home and a work. Energy, which provides us ease in every aspect of our lives allows us to do all of our works with less effort. In order to take advantage of this convenience continuously we must use the energy efficiently.

Human being cannot survive without electricity in the current modern time. For example; imagine a house without electricity. Without electricity means lack of any electrical device at home. Lack of vacuum cleaner or other white goods which facilitate our mothers’ work, uncharged mobile phones which youth never leave, unoperating computers which replaced encyclopedia for homework inquiries will cause difficulties in our lives.

We must use the energy, which has such an important role in our life more efficiently to avoid truble in the future. With minor sparing attitudes – i.e. not to turn on all lights in the rooms at home, to turn on only the light of the room we are in, to unplug electrical devices unused – we can become role models for our children and provide a livable life to future generations.

WHAT IS THE ENERGY

WHAT IS THE ENERGY

Energy is the ability to function. Being present in all materials, emerged in the form of heat and light, it is the effective power of the organism. It is a spiritual power that is addressed to everyone from adults to children. In the 21st century, along which the energy resources have been consumed rapidly and unconsciously, due to climate change resulting from global warming, energy efficiency has become one of the most important issues.

All products we use in daily life either inside the household or outside the household depend on electricity. From refrigerator to washing and dishwashing machine, from radio and television to computers, from iron to oven, all decives need electricity. Apart from this, cars need petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel, stoves need coal as fuel. Shortly, energy is required to maintain an order.

All these devices just mentioned above are similar to a human body. In a similar way how people get tired by losing energy in their social life, these tools we use become useless in a certain time after losing energy. Energy efficiency awareness is essential in order to extend lifecycles of these machines and to provide savings. Energy efficiency consists of minimizing the consumption of the energy amount  without reducing the amount and the quality of the production, without preventing the development of the national economy. There are many available studies carried out in this domain. A practice carried out as “Energy Kid” is one of these projects. Projects are carried out within the scope of this practice in order to raise the proper awareness among children as the future generation. This practice aims to introduce energy resources to children and raise their awareness regarding the importance of renewable energy resources and efficient use of these resources. These are television commercials, computer games, currently popular social networks, animation movies and cartoons on this subject. Apart from these, activities such as various competitions and educational programs are organized for children. So, the children’s awareness raises while having fun.

Watching television is one of the activites which children spare most of the time for in daily time. Children and adults watch television for different purposes. Children spare at least 2 hours a day in front of television for learning the world, improving their ego and play-entertainment. Therefore, television activities dedicated to energy efficiency will have a major impact on children. Furthermore, one of the most important activities regarding this subject will be computer games. While enjoying games, children will meantime be informed about energy efficiency and energy resources, these games will let them learn how to protect these resources.

In the field of education, “Energy Kid” project is carried out. Hereof the character called “Naz” will be introduced to students by brochures distributed in schools. Thus, children educated in schools about the energy will become conscious generations in the future. These practices that provide sustainability in society will continue reach children in various fields.
